The writing contest consisted of creating an acrostic poem; for the art portion, a bag of various items including pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks, dowel rods, washers, pom poms and entrants were used to create some type of harness racing-related image or scene.

The Kairewich sisters diligently worked on the box activities all summer. Mother Hayley wrote “thanks for giving them a fun box to look forward to each month; you have even hooked the youngest with these boxes! I think you have done your job here for sure.”

Cameron Daniels’ mother included some description with his art diorama entry:

“A futuristic racetrack and he clearly thinks the tote board/TV needs to be way bigger. There’s product advertising on every inch of the perimeter fence. The washers mounted to the top of the grandstand? …they are actually speakers for ‘good’ music. It also appears future horses will wear much less gear. Head numbers to be replaced with giant colored pom poms, possibly to match post position? Also, in the future, he says kids are allowed to fish in the infield pond, even on race nights. Slushees and popcorn are free!”

HHYF developed the activity boxes as a way to continually engage and educate young people about racing despite the cancellation of hands-on summer programs. HHYF is already deep into the production of similar units with anticipated release scheduled for holiday gift-giving.

HHYF programs would not be possible without the support of our 2020 sponsors: Diamond Creek Farm, Lindy Farms, Meadows Standardbred Association, PA Harness Horsemen’s Association, Standardbred Breeders of PA, US Harness Writers Association, US Trotting Association, IN Standardbred Association, PA Horse Racing Association, Blue Chip Farms, Brittany Farms, Fair Island Farm, Fair Winds Farm, Pinske Stables, Purple Haze Stable, Southern Oaks Training Center, VA Harness Horse Association, Joe Asher, Chris McErlean, Jim and Georgia Simpson, and Howard and Marlene Taylor.
